Dinosaur Stories

This multi step activity involves students in research, synthesizing ideas, planning, creating, and composing.

Materials:

  • Paper
  • Paint
  • Dinosaur sponge shapes
Activity:

We began this activity by reading "The Dinosaur Who Lived in my Backyard" by B.G. Hennessey then proceeded into a class discussion of what our backyards might have looked like in the time of the dinosaurs.

It soon followed that it would be really cool to make our own dinosaur scene of what we thought our backyards would look like and to make a story to go with the picture.

We decided that it would be okay to have dinosaurs that didn’t live in the same time period to be in the pictures together because we saw that in fictional books all the time, and our stories were going to be fictional.

Procedure:

First we painted the background. We looked at the posters in our classroom and in many dinosaur books to see what other artists thought the world looked like then.

Next we sponge painted dinosaurs onto our background. We had to ensure that flying reptiles were flying, walking dinosaurs were walking, and dinosaurs that spent time in water, were in water. We also had to watch where we placed our dinosaurs as they were going to be the characters in our stories and the illustrations should match the stories.

Finally we created stories about our dinosaur characters and presented the stories and illustrations to our classmates.
