Weapons and Defenses

After learning about a number of dinosaurs through songs, books, and computer research, we made a list as a class of dinosaurs and their different weapons and defenses.

We wrote:

Stegosaurus – spikes on tail, plates on back

Tyrannosaurus Rex – big body, big teeth

Triceratops – 3 horns, frill on head

Pteradactyl – wings to fly

Ankylosaurus – armoured body, club on tail, spikes, horns

Brontosaurus – big body, long tail

We talked about how spikes, tails, horns, etc. helped each dinosaur survive.  We also talked about what colors the dinosaurs might have been.  We learned that we don’t really know what colors dinosaurs were but we guessed that they were shades of greens and browns for camouflage.  The children then thought about what they would pick for protection if they could pick anything at all.

This led to an art project called the “Shoe-osaurus.”  To create this fantastical dinosaur each child followed the following steps:

1.       Each child traced his or her shoe on a colored piece (their choice of color) of construction paper.

2.     Then they cut out the shoe shape and mounted the shape on another large piece of construction paper.

3.     Next they had to think about what defense mechanism they would like their dinosaur to have.

4.     They cut and glued shapes of spikes, horns, tails, teeth, etc. onto their shoe shape until they were satisfied that their dinosaur would have a good chance in the prehistoric world.

Finally, the children wrote on a paper what their dinosaurs different weapons were and how the weapons helped the dinosaur.  They also indicated if it was a meat or plant eater.
